Malean Sampi is a tradition carried out by people of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Indonesia.
Malean Sampi has existed since the reign of the Dutch East Indies around the 18th century and also when the Japanese government. The activity continues evidenced by the Japanese flag image on Serumpungan or kerotok cow that competed. This activity has been sustained until now, especially in the Narmada.
In Sasak language of Lombok Malean Sampi consists of two words namely, Malean which means memalek or chase and Sampi word meaning cow. In this Malean Sampi, being put forward is that a person's ability to control a pair of cows were equipped with some equipment such as Gau, Ayuga, Samet, and Serumpungan or Kerotok. The couple cows to be contested, especially decorated beforehand. Before the show started, there was a parade of local women wear 'kebaya' Cows that have been decorated, led by Gamelan Kamput, Batek Baris Lingsar, Tawak-tawak and so on. Malean Sampi held by ranchers and farmers.
Malean Sampi always held on a flat piece of land with paddy field length of approximately 100 meters in the state is muddy, and usually held after the harvest. Malean Sampi is a religious symbol of Lombok people life. In the event, the crowd at the edge of the arena quite a lot, some of them are foreign tourists. The cows are decorated providing the main attraction. Cheers of the crowd began to sound when these cows are driven by the rider to run increasingly fast.
